First impressions
When I first arrived, despite knowing and expecting to hear German being spoken, it was still strange to hear everyone around me conversing in German. The fluency and speed of the locals, caused the already flustered me to fumble over my words and stutter whenever speaking was necessary. I accompanied my words with hand gesture and pointing. More often than not they would take pity on me and resort to English. I also find myself attempting to use the informal du form whenever I converse and have to constantly correct my speech to the formal Sie form - I am successful perhaps 3/4 of the time. Though I still get flustered and often need people to repeat what they said, I am able to somewhat comfortably and with some degree of fluency, converse when necessary.
The public transportation in Vienna, is astounding. The Ubahn, is conveniently located, extremely efficient, and punctual. During the week one never has to wait more than three minutes for he next train. With maps posted at the stations and signs directing commuters, the system is easy to use and I adapted to it quite quickly. After the program is over and I must return to Seattle, I will forever be dissatisfied with the transportation service. Having been spoiled with the ease and efficiency of the transportation here, it will be difficult to not complain back in the states.
Walking around the city and being able to see the historical buildings first hand, amazes me. History that before I had only read of in books, now has a more substantial connection. There is so many sights to see here, I am afraid three months will not be enough time to experience them all. Perhaps I'll have to start considering Vienna as a potential destination to settle down in, in the future.
